2010 ‘Sierra Leone’ Project

Sierra Leone Expedition / Project Phase One completed

We are delighted to report that Phase One of our project has been completed. The follwoing has been achieved:

  1. The Dando 2000 rig and Landrover have been delivered to the Pujehun District and are based at the village of Gbongay
  2. The local crew have been recruited and inducted into the Alive and Well community and their training has begun. They also live in Gbongay
  3. The UK crew (trustees: Paul Dowding, Kim Findlay, Will Hancock and Jon Sugden along with our engineer Gary Metcalf) spent three weeks in Gbongay setting up the project, training the crew and setting in place the processes needed to manage the project locally and from the UK.
  4. Drilling commenced, and was used as a training exercise for the Local crew, who have been named Orange Crew after the rig colour. Future rigs will be in different colours to differentiate rigs and crews.
  5. Local relationships and ties were built with the local MP (‘The Honourable’ as he is known. The Paramount Chief of the two Chiefdoms Alive and Well will work in. The local Council and all the Counsellors and the village Chiefs of the villages that we began drilling in.
  6. There is a drilling plan in place showing which villages we will be drilling in over the coming months.
  7. Local infrastructure issues assessed and where possible addressed and the ground laid for the next groups in 18 months time.
  8. The fact finding exercise was a great success with the trustees understanding the difficulties on the ground better and understanding where it is possible to expedite progress with support from the UK. There is much to be taken from the expedition and as we reflect on it further we will post developments here.

Fundraising Update

Fundraising now begins in earnest for Phase Two.

Phase Two is the provision of a living wage each month for the crew to enable them to make a good living for their families and to drill wells at no cost to the small impoverished villages that need clean safe water most.

Funds are needed to generate the next groups to take up the challenge of raising funds and buying a rig and shipping it out to Sierra Leone to begin the process again.
